As per reports, TCS is closing its Bhopal centre after 13 years, putting nearly 1,000 employees at risk and prompting state government intervention.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services company, is shutting down its Bhopal office after 13 years of operations. The move, which reportedly began in June 2025, has raised concerns over job security and the wider economic impact on Madhya Pradesh.
According to Trak.in, the closure directly affects close to 1,000 employees at the Bhopal facility. Many have received transfer notices, while others face uncertain employment prospects. The outlet reported that some employees have reached out to Madhya Pradesh’s Finance Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda, requesting his intervention in the matter.
The publication said that Devda has written to TCS Chief Executive Officer K. Krithivasan, urging the company to reconsider the decision. He pointed out that TCS continues to operate in other tier-2 cities such as Ahmedabad, Patna, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar and Kochi, and appealed for similar treatment for Bhopal.
The minister reportedly warned that the closure could lead to revenue losses worth crores and disrupt livelihoods in the region.
Citing the report, TCS is estimated to generate nearly ₹500 crore in annual business from Madhya Pradesh. The exit from Bhopal could therefore weigh heavily on local commerce, reduce tax inflows, and deal a blow to the city’s IT ecosystem. With fewer large employers remaining, displaced workers may be forced to migrate to larger metropolitan hubs or look for opportunities outside the state.
The report also noted that the decision highlights the challenges faced by India’s tier-2 cities in retaining large IT operations. While companies such as TCS expanded into smaller centres over the past decade to tap talent pools and cut costs, recent consolidation trends indicate a renewed focus on major IT hubs like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune.
What next
According to Trak.in, the Madhya Pradesh government is attempting to engage with TCS to either reverse or delay the closure. However, the company appears to be moving ahead with asset relocation. For employees and the state economy, the outcome of these talks will be critical.
TCS has not issued an official statement on the matter.
